There is tension in Onitsha Market as traders in Abada Market in
Onitsha, Anambra State yesterday vowed not to pay the new levies/taxes
in the market until election is conducted to elect new executive members
of the market which was put on hold for some time now.
The traders allegedly booed their chairman, Chief Paul Ibeneme Igirigi,
when he addressed them yesterday morning on the condition of the market
as it concerns the election at the market.
The chairman told the traders the need to pay the state Environmental
Protection Agency (ANSEPA) levy, which increased from N400 to N500. This
drew the ire of the traders, who vowed not to pay the new fee. They insisted on taking to the streets if the election is not conducted before December.
Some of the traders in the market, Chiefs Achumu Gilbert and Columba
Enwelemadu expressed dissatisfaction that Igirigi has remained in office
for over 10 years.
