Dr Ada Igonoh, the only female doctor to have survived Nigeria's Ebola epidemic has given birth to a baby girl.

First Consultant Medical Centre announced the baby girl weighing just a little over four kilos was born at the Greater El-Monte Community Hospital, California. Igonoh was a resident staff at First Consultant, whose staff became infected after being exposed to Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian American who collapsed on arrival at Lagos airport. Igonoh has been under surveillance since she conceived to ensure her child is free of the virus, which killed a total of eight people in Nigeria, including Sawyer, at its height.

Doctors certified the baby girl Ebola free. A statement from the World Health Organisation said staff and friends of First Consultant Medical Centre "are jubilant in celebration as they welcome a new lease of life to the institution and in memory of fallen colleagues and Survivors of Ebola."
The World Health Organization, in concert with the Centre for Disease Control, formally declared Nigeria Ebola-Free on October 20, 2014.
