A middle-aged woman escaped death
by the whiskers, after she was attacked by a mob who accused
her of kidnapping six children, at Iyana-Iba area of Lagos. The woman, identified simply as Mrs Nwamu, was later discovered to be
the departmental head of Sports and Tourism of PRO LABORE DEI, a
Catholic Diocese in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Nwamu, who was said to be receiving treatment at an undisclosed
private hospital, was also discovered to be owner of a motherless
babies’ home around Badagry area of the state. She was said to have been accompanied by six children, clad in
uniforms, later discovered to be that of her home. Destination, as
gathered, was Ibadan, where they were to attend a monthly vigil. However, on reaching Iyana-Iba, some women reportedly raised the
alarm, apparently thinking that the children could have been kidnapped.
An eyewitness told Vanguard: “When she was accosted to
identify who the children were, she paid little or no attention. That
made everyone to conclude that she could have kidnapped the children.
“A mob suddenly descended on her. But for the timely intervention of
policemen, she would have been killed. Some of the children, whose ages
were between four and nine years, sustained injuries in the process as
she was struggling to release them from her attackers’ grips. “Meanwhile, a woman was shouting at the top of her voice that she
knew the woman as the operator of a motherless babies’ home. She also
said that the woman helped a lunatic to deliver her baby and that the
lunatic and her baby were in her home in Badagry. “But the mob turned deaf ears to the claim, saying she could be a member of her gang.” Spokesman for Lagos State Police Command, Mr Joe Offor, condemned the mob attack, clarifying that the woman was innocent. At 6.30p.m., Offor said three of the children were still asleep, adding that their foster mother was responding to treatment. Members of the Catholic Diocese invited to ascertain her claim, according to Offor, confirmed that Nwamu’s was one of them.
